The Afterschool Alliance’s Lights On Afterschool poster contest is officially underway! Afterschool program participants are encouraged to submit artwork that celebrates afterschool programs and conveys the importance of keeping the lights on afterschool.
The winning poster design will be printed on 70,000 posters sent to Lights On Afterschool celebrations across the country, not to mention that the winning artist will be featured on the website, blog and Afterschool Storybook.
The deadline for submissions is May 1, 2012. Keep in mind that the winning artwork will be scanned to become a digital image, so avoid using textures or raised materials. Bright colors jump off the poster, so consider using materials that won’t smear or rub off. Markers, paint and pens often work better than crayons, watercolors or chalk. NASA Invites Students to Name Moon-Bound Spacecraft

WASHINGTON -- NASA has a class assignment for U.S. students: help the agency give the twin spacecraft headed to orbit around the moon new names.
The naming contest is open to students in kindergarten through 12th grade at schools in the United States. Entries must be submitted by teachers using an online entry form. Length of submissions can range from a short paragraph to a 500-word essay. The entry deadline is Nov. 11.
NASA's solar-powered Gravity Recovery And Interior Laboratory (GRAIL)-A and GRAIL-B spacecraft lifted off from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Fla. on Sept. 10 to begin a three-and-a-half-month journey to the moon. GRAIL will create a gravity map of the moon using two spacecraft that orbit at very precise distances. The mission will enable scientists to learn about the moon's internal structure and composition, and give scientists a better understanding of its origin. Accurate knowledge of the moon's gravity also could be used to help choose future landing sites.
"A NASA mission to the moon is one of the reasons why I am a scientist today," said GRAIL Principal Investigator Maria Zuber from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge. "My hope is that GRAIL motivates young people today towards careers in science, math and technology. Getting involved with naming our two GRAIL spacecraft could inspire their interest not only in space exploration but in the sciences, and that's a good thing."
Zuber and former astronaut Sally Ride of Sally Ride Science in San Diego will chair the final round of judging. Sally Ride Science is the lead for GRAIL's MoonKAM program, which enables students to task cameras aboard the two GRAIL spacecraft to take close-up views of the lunar surface.
NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., a division of the California Institute of Technology, manages the GRAIL mission. GRAIL is part of the Discovery Program managed at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala. Lockheed Martin Space Systems in Denver built the spacecraft.

Cassini Scientist for a Day essay contest

NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory announces the Fall 2011 Cassini Scientist for a Day essay contest.
The contest is open to all grade 5-12 students in the United States. Students work alone or in groups of up to four students. They write an essay of up to 500 words about one of three possible imaging targets (Saturn's moons: Hyperion; Rhea & Titan; or Saturn) and justify their choice as to which would potentially yield the best science. Winners are invited to participate in a teleconference with Cassini scientists and engineers from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. The contest meets national science and English education standards. All entrants receive a certificate of participation. The contest deadline is noon (Pacific Time) October 26, 2011.

What Is Your Favorite EE Lesson Plan? The West-Central LEEF (League of Environmental Educators in Florida) regional advisory committee is sponsoring an environmental education lesson plan contest. Entries will be displayed at the Camp Bayou Outdoor Learning Center's November 11-13, 2011 event- A Natural Education Weekend (ANEW)- http://anaturaleducation.blogspot.com. Entries will be judged by a trio of faculty from Hillsborough Community College- SouthShore, an ANEW event partner. Winner will receive a scholarship to the LEEF conference, not to exceed a value of $200, to be held March 29- April 1, 2012, http://leef-florida.org. Contest details: - Entries must include, at a minimum: * Learning objective (ie. students will understand water cycle); * Grade level(s), * Time necessary to complete, * Materials needed, * Description of activity- be as specific as possible so that anyone reading it will be able to duplicate it in their classroom or with their youth group. - The activity may be a newly developed creation but may also be an existing EE curriculum that you have noticeably modified and is not already available in copyrighted materials elsewhere. - Entries should not exceed 5 pages. Entries should be submitted as a Word document, (formatted with Arial 12 pt font). Email as attachment to w.c.leef10@gmail.com. - A bonus point will be awarded if a photo is attached showing the activity in use. - In the event of a tie, entrant who is current LEEF member will be awarded prize. There is no fee to enter and all entrants will receive a CD, with all lesson plans submitted, after the event. Entrants do not have to be present to win.
